FAQ
Who is Laser Hair Removal For?
Laser hair removal isn’t just a luxury or passing trend — it’s a practical, long-term solution for a wide variety of people. It’s time to rethink what you know about laser and who it’s for.
Here are just a few of the people who can benefit male and female:
1. Anyone dealing with unwanted hair
Whether it’s your chin, upper lip, underarms, bikini area, back, chest, or even toes — if there’s hair you’d rather not have, laser can help. It delivers lasting results and smooth skin without the daily hassle.
2. Those with hormonal imbalances
Conditions like PCOS often cause excess facial and body hair, which can be difficult — and emotionally draining — to manage. Laser offers a long-term solution that can make a big difference in both appearance and confidence.
3. People prone to ingrown hairs
Ingrown hairs are more than a nuisance — they can be painful, irritated, and leave scarring. Laser hair removal targets the hair at the root, helping reduce regrowth and breaking the frustrating cycle of shaving and irritation.
4. Busy parents & professionals
If you’re always short on time, laser hair removal can be a game-changer. No more emergency waxing appointments or rushed shaves before heading out — just smooth, low-maintenance skin.
5. Athletes and fitness lovers
From cyclists and swimmers to dancers and bodybuilders, smooth, hair-free skin can support performance, hygiene, and body confidence. That’s why many active individuals turn to laser for a cleaner, more comfortable feel.
6. Those with Keratosis Pilaris or “Strawberry Legs”
If shaving and waxing make those tiny bumps or dark spots worse, laser might help. It reduces irritation and helps improve the appearance of rough or blotchy skin over time.
7. Anyone tired of short-term fixes
Tried waxing, shaving, threading, creams — and still not happy? Laser hair removal offers long- lasting reduction, leaving your skin smoother, softer, and easier to maintain.
Is laser for everyone?
Laser is highly effective, but not one-size-fits-all. A consultation is always recommended to assess your skin type, hair type, and any medical considerations (like certain medications or conditions). Most people are suitable and begin seeing results within just a few sessions.
How does laser hair removal work?
• Laser hair removal works by selectively targeting the melanin (pigment) in the hair follicles with laser light energy. The high energy of the laser is absorbed by the melanin, which damages the hair follicle and destroys the bulb which impairs its ability to produce new hair. However, not all hair follicles are in the same stage of growth at the same time, and only those in the active growth phase (anagen) can be effectively treated.
• Hair follicles go through three stages of growth: anagen (active growth), catagen (transitional), and telogen (resting). On average, about 10-15% of hair follicles are in the resting stage at any given time, and these cannot be treated with laser hair removal. Additionally, the duration of the anagen phase varies between individuals, and can be influenced by factors such as hormones, age, and overall health.
• Therefore, multiple treatments are typically needed to target all the active hair follicles in a given area.
How many sessions are needed for hair removal?
• The number of sessions needed for hair removal can vary depending on several factors, such as the individual’s hair and skin type, the area being treated, and the type of laser used.
• Typically, most people need between 6 to 12 sessions to achieve optimal results for hair removal. The number of sessions needed is often influenced by the individual’s hair growth cycle, as laser hair removal is most effective when the hair is in the active growth phase (anagen phase).
• Since hair growth occurs in cycles, multiple sessions are needed to target the hair in all growth stages.
• Anagen phase typically, lasts between 30 to 45 days.
• Catagen phase lasts for about 2-3 weeks.
• Telogen phases typically lasts for about 2-4 months.
• It’s worth noting that not all hair will be in the same phase at the same time, and different hairs will be at different stages of the cycle.
Is laser hair removal permanent?
• While laser hair removal is often referred to as a “permanent” solution for unwanted hair, it’s important to note that the results are typically considered to be “permanent hair reduction” rather than “permanent hair removal.”
• This is because while laser hair removal can significantly reduce hair growth in targeted areas. It’s possible for some hair to grow back over time.
• This may require occasional maintenance treatments to maintain the desired results.
• Typically yearly top up treatments are required to maintain hairless and flawless results. – maintenance is key!
How should you prepare for treatments?
• Avoid sun exposure for a minimum of 7 days. If you must be in the sun, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 preferably 50!
• Shave the treatment area 24 hours before your session. Avoid waxing or plucking the treatment area for at least four weeks before treatment.
• On the day of your laser hair removal treatment, do not use perfumes, deodorants or moisturiser deodorant in the treatment area.
• You will need to wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the treatment area. Avoid wearing tight clothing that may rub against the treated skin and cause discomfort.
• Your laser hair removal practitioner will give you specific instructions on how to prepare for your treatment. It’s essential to follow their instructions carefully to ensure a safe and effective treatment.
What aftercare should I follow after treatment?
• Avoid sun exposure as much as possible. Sun exposure can cause skin damage and hyperpigmentation, If you must be in the sun, use a high-quality sunscreen with a high SPF minimum 30 and reapply it frequently.
• Avoid hot showers and baths for at least 24 hours. Hot water can irritate the skin and cause redness and swelling, Instead, use cool or lukewarm water to soothe the skin.
• Avoid exfoliating, such as scrubs and chemical peels, for at least 10 days after laser hair removal. It can irritate the skin and cause redness and swelling. Instead, use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser (Aloe Vera) to soothe and hydrate the skin.
• Wear loose clothing to avoid rubbing or chafing the treated area. Opt for loose-fitting clothing made from breathable materials, such as cotton.
• Following your practitioner’s aftercare instructions is crucial to maintaining the results of laser hair removal. Your practitioner will provide you with specific instructions based on your skin type and the treatment area.
Can You Get Hair Removal on Tanned Skin?
• Yes, you can get hair removal treatments on tanned skin. However, it’s important to note that the effectiveness of the treatment may be reduced due to the increased melanin in the skin. This means that you may need more treatments to achieve the desired results.
• There are some risks associated with getting hair removal treatments on tanned skin. One of the biggest risks is the potential for skin damage, such as burns or blisters. This is because the melanin in the skin absorbs more energy from the laser, which can cause overheating and damage to the skin.
• If you decide to get hair removal on tanned skin, there are some precautions you should take to minimize the risk of skin damage:
• Choose a laser that is specifically designed for tanned skin, like the one we use here at “See Ya Laser”Chester. These lasers have longer wavelengths that can penetrate deeper into the skin without overheating the surface.
• Avoid sun exposure for at least 7 days before and after the treatment. This will help to minimize the amount of melanin in the skin, reducing the risk of skin damage.
• Use sunscreen with a high SPF to protect the treated area from further sun damage.
How can Laser Hair Removal Help Treat Folliculitis?
• Folliculitis is a skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become inflamed. This can cause small red bumps or white-headed pimples to appear on the skin’s surface, often accompanied by itchiness or discomfort. Folliculitis can occur anywhere on the body where hair grows, but it is most commonly found on the scalp, face, neck, and legs.
• Aesthetic laser hair removal can help treat folliculitis by reducing the need for traditional hair removal methods that can irritate hair follicles and cause inflammation.
• Laser hair removal works by targeting the hair follicle with a laser beam, which heats and destroys the follicle, preventing future hair growth.
What is Crystal Freeze®️ and how does it work?
• It is a unique cooling tip that frosts the surface of the lasers handle, creating a layer of cold that helps to cool the skin during the laser hair removal process. Unlike other cooling methods, Crystal Freeze®️ doesn’t emit air, which can potentially spread bacteria and compromise the sterility of the treatment area.
Patients can experience a range of benefits, including:
• Pain Reduction: The cooling effect of Crystal Freeze®️ helps to reduce the pain and discomfort associated with laser hair removal treatments.
• Increased Comfort: Patients can experience increased comfort during laser hair removal treatments, making the experience more pleasant overall.
• Reduced Risk of Burns: Crystal Freeze®️ helps to cool the skin and reduce the risk of burns or other skin damage that can occur during laser hair removal treatments.
• Faster Treatments: Because Crystal Freeze®️ helps to reduce pain and discomfort, treatments may be completed more quickly, allowing for more efficient use of time for both the patient and the practitioner.
• Ice packs for extra cooling can be applied if needed.
Is Immediate Hair Shedding Good or Bad?
• There is a difference between actual hair shedding and hair burning or popping immediately after the treatment.
• Real hair shedding occurs at the anagen stage and can happen anytime up to 3+ weeks rather than immediately.
• Some clients may not notice much shedding compared to others either.
• If clients don’t shave close enough during the treatment, light energy gets absorbed in the wrong place such as the hair shaft rather than the hair follicles. This causes unnecessary pain, not as good a result because of energy wastage on the hair above the skin, resulting in hair popping out.
• Clients must shave smooth and as close as possible so that there is no stubble to prevent unnecessary hair singeing.
• Immediate hair popping is an illusion to the eye and not actual shedding of hair in the anagen stage which usually happens after a few weeks of treatment.
• Similar to waxing, it is immediate to the naked eye but it is not follicle destruction. For great laser results, the hair needs to shed naturally after a few weeks with the help of self-exfoliating.
What are the risks of laser hair removal?
• One of the potential risks of laser hair removal is skin discolouration, particularly in individuals with darker skin tones. Our machines are designed with advanced technology that allows for precise control over the laser energy delivered to the skin. This means that our machines can be calibrated to match different skin types and hair colours, minimising the risks of skin discolouration and other side effects.
• In addition, our machines are suitable for all skin types, including darker skin tones. We understand that individuals with darker skin tones are at a higher risk of skin discolouration during laser hair removal, and that’s why we have chosen a machine designed to be safe and effective for all skin types.
• Laser hair removal can also cause skin irritation, including redness, itching, and swelling and Follicular Oedema. These side effects are usually temporary and can be managed with over-the-counter creams or pain relievers. However, in some cases, skin irritation can be more severe, and may require medical attention.
What is the difference between Men and Woman in Laser?
• Men tend to have thicker and denser hair growth compared to women. This difference is primarily due to hormonal factors, with men having higher levels of androgens, such as testosterone. Thicker hair can require more laser energy and additional sessions to achieve desired results.
• Hormonal factors play a significant role in hair growth patterns and can affect the success of laser hair removal.
• Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can lead to excessive hair growth in women, requiring additional sessions for effective reduction. Hormonal fluctuations, such as those experienced during puberty or menopause, can also impact hair growth. Men, on the other hand, may have hair growth influenced by testosterone levels and may require ongoing maintenance sessions.
• While the underlying principles of laser hair removal are the same for both men and women, it’s essential to have realistic treatment expectations based on gender-specific hair growth.
Common concerns and treatment options for transgender individuals?
• Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can affect hair growth patterns, which may require additional treatments to fully achieve the desired result. It is important to have open and honest communication with your practitioner about your individual needs and expectations.
• some individuals may experience dysphoria or discomfort during laser hair removal treatments. We will work with patients to provide a comfortable and supportive environment, as well as suggest other methods to help alleviate any discomfort.
• Overall, It can be a safe and effective solution for transgender individuals seeking long-lasting hair removal.
